How to find and use your Inner Guru

Guru means spiritual teacher. Although often reserved for specific spiritual teachers, each of us has our own Guru: Ourselves. More specifically- our Guru is an inner knowing that resides in our heart space.

This is much different from the mind (ego) which, when unbalanced, is akin to a macho, know-it-all, who acts with bravado even though deep down, there is a vulnerability (hence, the macho behaviour).

How can we set aside the logical thought control of the ego and instead allow the inner Guru to guide us?

Here is a very simple exercise, that with some practice, will keep you in a heart-centered space long enough for your inner Guru to guide you.

  • Put your hand over your heart.
  • Feel any sensations that come up.
  • Just observe them and let them go.
  • Now, think of a something you really don’t like, and sense what happens in the heart space or elsewhere in the body. Where does it show up? What does it feel like? What happens to your posture? Or mood? Tap into the feeling of what is happening in your body.
  • Next, think of a something that you really do like, and sense what happens. In the same way, assess what shifts in the body. What changes? What stays the same? Really notice how your body feels.
  • Once you get practice with this, you can ask yourself a question and feel what comes up.
  • If you feel the sensation is similar to something you dislike, then it’s likely a ‘no’ answer to your question. If you feel the sensation as if you like something, it is likely a ‘yes’ answer.
  • Have fun practicing asking a question and ‘feeling’ where your Guru leads you.

Give yourself space to connect each day – ideally for at least 10 mins. Set aside this time to connect with the incredible power of your inner knowing.

I have a ‘feeling’ you will be amazed.
